I just bought a 95 se contour. The prevoius owner had this car for about 2 years and only put 5000 miles on it, now it has 68k that i bought it! I went to do the state inspection , the guys there ran it three times and failed all three. They told me that my car is giving off to much carbon monoxide. WHat could this be and what could i do to pass the inspection?

well 2 years and only 5000 miles, not driven much and there is probably A LOT of carbon build up in the engine(hence the CO rating). You need to clean out the engine of all old fluids(oil, coolant, gas, ect). Also, try to put in some injector cleaner to loosen it up. Don't beat on it right away, give it a bit to break in, then beat on it a bit. the carbon needs to be forced out.

Suggestions:
- Use fuel cleaner (Chevron Techron or Regane) - Replace air filter - Take it for a long drive on a highway
1996 Contour SE Sedan 4D (Royal Blue) Duratec V6 2.5L 24-valve DOHC Automatic 75,000 miles No Mods (unless you call the DMD a mod) Replaced EGR valve (gunked up), EVR (EGR VR), PCV valve, and evaporative emissions hose (cracked).

i drive exactly 100km every day
50km each way to and from work
2 turns each way, abour 25 minutes @ 75 mph straight... my reading were very very very low
i run a bottle of prestone injector/valve cleaner thru now and then

Agree on fuel cleaner: try 20oz Tecron, then new air cleaner and some spirited driving. After tank with additive used up, change the oil AND the spark plugs. You will pass.

O2 sensor could be shot...you might try a long (100+ mile) drive on the highway, that might revive it.
Carbon deposits in the combustion chamber usually cause excess NOx.
Also change the oil...if it's contaminated with fuel it will make the engine run rich hence the CO failure.
Fuel contamination is more likely if it's only used for short trips.

Carbon buildup has NOTHING to do with CO levels. That is a product of combustion. You are burning either too lean or too rich.... I think it's too lean... Cleaning the carbon deposits will help performance but have nothing to do with how the combustion process works.

Too lean would cause NOx, not CO.
