the only way in hell a 5.0 mustang will be even with an ser spec v,is either driver error on your friends part,or they installed a NON HO 5.0 motor built in the early 80's...

you are correct in that there are 2 different versions of the 5.0 motor...the HO(high output) which came in the mustang, and the non HO which came in select passenger cars...the HO mustang motor from 87 to 93 produces 225 horsepower, and 300 lb. ft. of torque...and the 94-95 HO motor made 215 hp and 285 lb. ft.....if either of those motors were installed in your friends car than it should be pretty fast...the non HO motor may be not so fast in a pretty heavy car, such as his...

also it depends on the year of the engine...just because it is a 5.0 motor, doesn't necessarily mean it makes alot of hp...for instance the 82 HO motor only put out about 157 hp,and the 84 about 175....and the non HO's of those years were even less than that...so it is likely that the motor in your friends car could be an older style block and heads....
