I'm looking to build up a Zetec for a side project (not to put in the wife's car) but I'm kinda lost with the different types/version of the Z. Is there a FAQ some where that will explain which engines came in which cars and the pros and cons of each? I need some help deciding where to source my motor from (other than from an SVT, lol). TIA

You want the ZX3 Focus zetec for modding. Hot rodding parts are available locally and there are more tuners playing with this engine than the pre97 contour hydro valvetrain zetec with no aftermarket support in the US and the English stuff is very expensive. There is a midget series nationally that uses modded Focus "stockblocks" with power above 240.
I'm currently using a pre 97 hydro zetec in my se7en and imported some Kent cams from Burtonpower in the UK. Now i'm investigating the possibility of switching the cylinderhead for that of the Focus due prices and parts availability.

Thanks for the input guys. Are the Focus Z's different than the 98+ Z's from other vehicles (i.e. Tour, Mystique)?
Se7en, your use of the Z is very close to what I want to build mine up for... Do you have a website or some pics of your setup? What tranny are you using? Thanks!

Yes the 98+ Zetecs have VCT which variable cam timing. The Focus motors dont have that (except the SVT) The focus is the Best Zetec so far.
95 Tour ATX Zetec
EGR Block OFF
Polished TB
Polishe Vavle cover
Energy suspension Greaseable sway bar bushings Front and rear
Red interior lights 1/2 done
Home made short ram intake
Custom Grills

To summerize(I think): Different heads- 95-97 Contour 98-00 Contour w/VCT 00+ Focus 03+ Focus SVT w/VCT Is this right? Also, are the blocks the same? (meaning interchangeable heads) Oeneus

I'm not sure if I should post, I'll probably get yelled out. i THINK the heads are interchangeable but you also have to change other stuff, ESPECIALLY if you put a SVT head on.
98.5 SVT
91 Escort GT (almost sold)
96 ATX Zetec (i brake to watch you swerve)
FS: SVT rear sway bar
WTB: Very cheap beater
