Its pretty much unavoidable. If the exhaust is cool enough, you can throw some shop towels over to catch the oil. I just wipe everything down real good before I start her up to check for leaks. The small bit that's left will burn off in no time.
Yeah, I just let it splash, and wipe it down when im done. Havent noticed any burnt smell whatsoever after startup...
