What is the correct thermostat temp for the '96 V6?

I just noticed that several online stores have a 180 degree Stant stat listed for this engine, but
other stores w/other brands, as well as the Motorcraft site, have a 190 listed.

I checked at work (Advance), & the Stant catalog has 180 listed as original equipment temp. But Stant only makes a regular stat for this engine, & I would rather have the SuperStat.

Why would you want your engine to run at lower than its recommended operating temperature?

a. lower mpg
b. higher emissions
c. poorer performance
d. so I'll have more time to react when wp fails
e. all of the above

Stock V6 thermostat is 180 degrees.

You do not want to install a 195 degree unit.

"Stock V6 thermostat is 180 degrees. You do not want to install a 195 degree unit."

Just curious, & I'm sure you're right, but how do you know this? I haven't had my old one out yet, so I don't know what temp was stamped on the original - maybe you have? (Are Motorcraft stats stamped?)

The Ford Shop Manual (page 03-03-24) says that it starts to open at 183-190, & is fully open at 210. Haynes manual says starts to open at 189-194, fully open at 216.

The Motorcraft stat for this engine, #RT-1104, is listed as a 190.

So I'm confused.... confused

Ford Factory Service CD states it. I ran across it when going through them. This was for the 2000 model year.

180 degrees for V6 & 192 for I4

It also lists pretty close to the same specs you list for the Ford manuals you posted (was 180-184 opening IIRC - it's been a while)

Either way you do not want to go up in temperature to a 195... You want to run as cool as possible and still be within the computer's operating temperature.

Is it possible that there are different thermostats for different model years?

Just changed water pump and thermostat in my 2000 SVT. The Thermostat that came out said it was a 188 degree. I replaced it with a 180 which I checked before I put it in and it opened a little hotter than that. I don't think the 8 degrees is going to make that much of a diffrence. Got a 192 -195 for my wifes mystique for when I do that system.

Rule of thumb, as long as you are within the calibration perameters of the EEC, running coolant cooler = more power, running slightly hotter=better mpg economy.Example , most electric pump controllers can be adjusted for temp.....

Isn't there a spec as X temp it starts to open and a higher temp when it's fully open?
