How often does anybody replace the PCV valve? As far as I can tell, mine's the original (97 ATX 146K 2.5L). Is it a ***** to get to? Also, how do you check to see how the EGR is working properly? Car runs a little sluggish, idle not as smooth at times. confused

I had the dealer change my PCV last time I had the oil changed. It would have been done on my 4 cyl. at 60,000 for free if I had remembered. But it was only $6.00 or so. I was told getting the old one out was easy but getting the new one in was not fun. Especially since the exhaust manifold was still pretty warm.

Not sure if the V6 has an "interval" for replacement or not.

I don't even know where the egr valve is... is it the UFO looking saucer thing?
About the PCV valve I changed mine two weeks ago and looked at the old one. Besides a small amount of oil on part of it, it was like new.
I would check yours and if it looks okay, keep it.

According to the Ford TSP (Technical Service Publication) for the 1996 Contour, the PCV valve should be replaced every 60,000 miles. Also:

Quote:
At 60,000 miles (96,000 km) your dealer will replace the PCV valve at not cost except on Canada and California vehicles.

1996 Contour SE Sedan 4D (Royal Blue)
Duratec V6 2.5L 24-valve DOHC
Automatic
75,000 miles
No Mods (unless you call the DMD a mod)
Replaced EGR valve (gunked up), EVR (EGR VR), PCV valve, and evaporative emissions hose (cracked).
