California, New York and Massachusetts only)

The 2.3L DOHC PZEV I-4 Engine delivers 145 horsepower @ 5750 rpm and 149 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4200 rpm. The dual overhead cam design improves engine breathing and contributes to higher performance. Because Focus is relatively lightweight, it has a low torque-to-weight ratio, which also contributes to great off-the-line acceleration.

For 2003, Focus will become Ford's first vehicle to meet Partial Zero Emmissions Vehicle (PZEV) standards. Engineers modified a current Focus 2.3L I-4 engine to earn California PZEV certfication. Key changes include:

Reprogrammed engine management computer
New 12-hole fueld injectors
Stainless steel fuel lines
14 gallon fuel tank
Coil-on-plug ignition system
New secondary air system
New dual-wall inlet pipe speeds warm-up of an improved catalytic converter
New catalytic monitoring sensor
Lifetime air filter (does not need to be changed for 15 years or 150,000 miles)
To achieve PZEV status, Focus had to meet three criteria:

Tailpipe emissions must meet the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) standards, which means 97 percent fewer hydrocarbon emissions, 76 percent less carbon monoxide and 97 percent less nitrous oxide than nationwide Tier I emissions standards
"Zero" gasoline evaporative emissions from the vehicle's fuel system, which required upgrading the entire fuel system and adding several new and unique components
Warranty coverage to ensure that the vehicle will meet PZEV standards for 15 years or 150,000 miles
Ford expects to produce approximately 40,000 units in the first year â?? the largest-market PZEV vehicle to date.

wonder how long it would take to rip all the emissions crap off and get to modding.

"...is it the standard block with new pistons/rods/crank? anyone know how this one works?"

It's NOT a "revised Zetec", nor is it a "Ranger engine". It is used in the new Rangers, but it is NOT the old 2.3 from the 80's/90's. It is the new family of Ford 4 cylinders and will be supplanting Zetecs by 2006-8.

It was designed by Mazda and Ford of Europe. Funny how everyone is suddenly interested in this motor now, when I mentioned it beofre no one cared.

And aluminum blocks have come a long way since the 1971 Chevy Vega.

All that is built into the engine and it's ECM. You can't just "rip stuff off" like on a 1970's V8. But, just like with OBD2, people got scared at first, but found ways to mod.

I still don't care.

If Ford never updated their engines, we would be still running the 4 cylinders from the Model T's. I've had 4 different Ford four bangers; Escort 1.9, Mazda 1.8, Zetec 2.0 (two versions). More designs will come, maybe even hybrids.

Gotta realize that car designs come and go, nothing lasts forever.

duh. i knew this already. computers have been made for our cars that can be completely programmed, etc. i mean rip stuff off in a figurative way, as you would be ripping hoses and sensors off, filling holes or fabricating new pieces (manifolds, etc.), and of course the computer. nothing that can't be handled.

If I'm gonna jam 20psi into a Zetec, I'll stick with the cast iron block.

That 2.3 looks like my '88 Accord. Enough vacuum hoses to choke Anna Nicole.
