okay, so I think I'm beginning to understand about this cone. 1. it's seperate from the basic impeller section that most people replace when they talk about replacing their wp. 2. You won't know until you remove the impeller section if the cone is defective or not. 3. If it is bad, the only recourse is replacement of the complete wp assembly with the Ford unit, the one that comes with the hoses, etc.
Is that it? confused

Yes, but in some cases if the cone has not damaged the housing it can be re-staked to hold it tight...

Terry, FWIW I tried re-punching my cone back in. I set at least 15 punches in the aluminum of the rear housing...to the point there was actually an aluminum overlap over the cone from each punch. It lasted me about 3-4 months then came loose again. Luckily I convinced my dealer to pull it and see for himself, and ESP covered it.

For me the bottom line is, is my year 2000 car equipped with an improved pump?

I have 34K miles and don't want to spend maybe 300 bucks at 49K to change it out. confused

1. Yes. However there have been the identical failures on the "supposedly better" designed pumps.

2. Why in the heck would it cost $300. The pump can be had for around $50-60 and is a no-brainer install. Provided the cone is intact.

What would it cost for labor to swap it? I don't have the facilities to do it.

I vote for dellowm to design a pump for the CEG'ers!!! I know if it was only that simple.
So the lastest plastic one that Ford has in the parts system, ( I just replaced the whole thing) anyone know what type or plastic it is, vs the orignal?? Beside different color laugh

178.5 mph, approx. I can be more accurate if someone can tell me the radius of the impeller and its weight.
Sounds like you?re estimating the tangential velocity. The ?rotating speed? was stated in the question @ 5000 rmp.

Doesn't the 4 cylinder have a plastic impeller, also?

They don't seem to have the same disintegration problems, so couldn't it be a matter of design and/or type of plastic, & not the fact that it's plastic itself?

If I remember correctly, I pulled a pump from the shelf the other day for a '97 4 cylinder - the impeller was plastic, but looked totally different - didn't have those fins - different design - looked more solid.
