I've got a pointed tip for my puller and it's worked fine for pulling it off without damage to the threads... Mates right to the angle of the tip of the crank as if it were made for it...

It would have been nice if the puller I rented from Autozone had a pointed tip or if I would have used my brain and stopped my cousin before he pulled the original crankshaft bolt out.

It's what the puller pushes against for leverage. If you don't use the bolt, you'll end up stripping the threads on the crank... hmmmmm
Hmmm...I've replace quite a few of them, and I've never had to use the original bolt. My pulley puller has a pointed tip and a flat tip. Neither ruined any threads. Craftsman Harmonic Balancer Puller
