A couple of little copper brushes or dremel tools...and lotsa elbow work (based on how many miles).
For example...the actual tear down/re-install took me 3 hours. The scrubbing/brushing/cursing/temper tantrum took me 6 hours!!! Its a PITA for sure...
Yeah! What he said!! mcgainer must've been with me yesterday when I did the job!
46K, mostly local, miles on mine (wife's car, not a heavy foot). The UIM/LIM/Head ports had almost 1/32" of granulated carbon crud caked on them, the nylon bushing connecting to the IMRC vacuum activator was gone, my fingers hurt like hell from pulling the injectors from the fuel rail (which was a real b**ch, thank goodness I have fuel line separator tools so I didn't have to do this work under the hood!), the o-rings were a little soft and tore easily AND, it took a friend & me 6+ hours to scrub the parts clean! Went through 4 cans of spray Berryman's, 2 gal of Xylene for soaking, 6 brass bristle "toothbrushes" & my rather morally upstanding neighbor won't talk to me anymore because of my colorful language (J/K). Dis-assy & assy was relatively easy at less than 1 hour each. Doing this job at 15K mi would've been a hell of a lot easier!!
Now, having pi$$ed and moaned, what a difference in performance! No lagging or bogging, no slow speed bucking at throttle application, much better cold engine driveability and MUCH more power. Lance's procedure was right on the money - thank you much Lance! Wish I'dve known about this a long time ago!!
One disturbing note is that I discovered a few small slit-like cracks in the hardened insulation of individual wires in the injector harness under the UIM, right where they separate into 2 branches before connecting to the injectors. The rest of the harnesses and wires in the engine compartment are still in good shape, with no signs of deterioration, and if it use the criteria for the replacement validation, it looks like Furd wouldn't go for warranty re-harnessing - damn! Anybody here had experience with dealing with them on this issue?
