Hey everyone, I know that water pumps are constantly a problem in Contours but what kind of noise would my car be making if the water pump was going bad.When i sit in traffic for a minute I start to hear a loud raspy noise that kinda sounds like my car is chain driven...almost like a go cart...lol Does anyone know what this could be.Oh, maybe this little bit of info would be helpfull. Well, when the rasp is occuring...I can turn my A/C on and it stops completely....what do you guys think? I didn't find anything with the search feature...Thanks a lot

I dont *think* they make a noise. I know the tmep gauge goes all theway up and you will not have any heat. the you will be stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. almost happened to me.

OMG, my temp guage broke back at 60,000 i have 80,000 now....is there a recall on the temp guage...I should get that fixed huh. What do you think the noise is then?

96' 2.0 Contour Gl ATX .....is that what ya mean by specs? I hope its nothing that is gonna cost me in the long run...I know its not normal though...it sounds horrible...It sounds like someone is pulling a chain across a peice of sheet metal...of course not ear splitting loud

Water pumps on 2.0L not usually a problem. Operating w/o temp gauge for long could cost you big $$ in the end since there is no idiot light.
Your current problem sounds like faulty lo-speed cooling fan bearing. If you have 2 fans, hi-speed comes on with a/c or extreme overtemp. Lo-speed comes on with normal overtemp when idling in stop & go traffic. Open hood when it happens and check source.

Its coming from the side of the engine where my belt is.  How would i go about fixing my temp guage? The light still comes on with my headlights but the needle doesn't go anywhere.

it may not be your water pump, i have the same prob. when ac is on at a red light, lould squealing, turn ac off and noise stops...then you should have your belt tensioner checked, how old is your serpentine belt?, if you are going to change the belt tensioner also change the idler pulley as well, hope this helps

Sounds like any of the following bearings going bad:
- water pump
- power steering pump
- tensioner
- maybe A/C
