\\1995 contour SE with duratech 2.5 liter. 105,000 miles.
does the timing chain need adjusting ? I'm using full synthetic oil. does the valve lash need adjustment () should be automatic( lifters crapped out )( does it have lifters on a dual overhead cam ? )
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: whether a cold start or even if its just sat 10 or 15 minutes i get a heck of a noisy head turning sound from what sounds like the valve train ( there is no chain .. its a serpentine belt i beleive between the crank and cams)
and .. i have this terrible noise under the hood when i first start up .. the valves or valve train tensioning or lubricating but it is a hurrendous set of like clicking sounds .. or sputtering (not the engine) .. but like a chain or valves . or cam or ????? .. it does have 105k on it ....
does the serpentine need adjustment or replacement ? are the cams worn ? are the lifters crapped out ? does this engine auto-self desctruct after the 100k maintanence free period is over ?
.. dont get me started on that damn coffee mug holder .. and the way the drinks find their way into the leather passenger seat !

No fan clutch on electric cooling fans, must be something else.

The timing chain tensionsers and guides were updated because of this issue, as well as the front engine cover.
You should get ready and save a few $$ for this because it is not a cheap job, but it is a lot cheaper to fix than having to tear down the engine, should the chain slip completely.

What for oil filter are you using at this time? I remember when I first used the upgraded FL-820S/Purolator PL-24651 it made a big difference on start-up. The anti-drain back valve oil pressure quicker. But with age and the early design problem the safe bet is to repair it. Paul Was or is there a TSB for the upgrade?

z_I REP/ACE THE OIL FILTER WITH SOMETHING CHEAP LIKE PUROLATOR OR FRAM OR OTHER CHEAP AND CONVENIENTLY FUNCTIONAL FILTER WITH EVERY OIL CHANGE.. FILTER IS ABOUT $2.50 .. THERE IS NO OIL PRESSURE QUANTITY OR GUAGE IN THE CONTOUR SE '95 .. JUST THE WARNING LIGHT SO I WOULDNT EVEN BE ABLE TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT FILTERS .. \ I CANT IMAGINE THE ENGINE IS THAT JUNK THAT IT CANT SPOOL UP OIL WITHIN 3 SECONDS TO THE TOP .. (IF IN FACT ITS JUST LACK OF OIL TO THE VALVE LIFTERS.) \ IT COULD BE A CHAIN SOUND ( BUT I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO CHAIN AS THATS WHAT THE SERPENTINE IS FOR) .. OR IT COULD BE THE LIFTERS .. .. I DONT THINK THERE IS A CLUTCH FAN .. IT IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND I'VE NEVER HEARD OF A CLUTCH FAN.. U PULLING A JOKE OR SOMETHING ?

the duratec has a pair of chains...under the heads(?)...im a doof but i think i know that much...the rattle is a ford design flaw most of the older (95's) probably has done it at some point...my car has the rattle on start up but i haven't noticed it in awhile....there is not a recall but there is a technical service bulletin (tsb) from ford with a fix
if yours is getting worse better take it and get it checked...a couple cars recently suffered expensive problems
