And, since you mentioned the fan, the radiator fan kicks to high speed when the refrigerant pressure rises above a certain level. Without the compressor running, you won't get the pressure to switch on the high-speed fan. (Without refrigerant, you sure won't get the pressure either! laugh Sorry, couldn't resist...)
