That little blurb at the top is a bunch of BS. Classic example of someone taking something and blowing it way out of proportion.
The story ran last year in, I think Newsweek, or a similar periodical, when they had their first 'integrated' Prom.
I don't remember the exact details of the story, but segregated proms weren't a matter of racism to these kids, they have a lot of "inter-racial friendships", it was a matter of tradition and even more a matter of practicality.
Go to a Prom, or any party, and what will you see -- blacks and whites voluntarily segregated. Each group doing their own thing.
The kids liked having their "own" parties, with music they preferred to listen to, and dancing they enjoyed doing. And they didn't enforce the segregation. You went to the "Black" Prom if you wanted to listen and dance to Rap/HipHop, and the "White" Prom if you wanted to listen to Country and Top 40.
Face it, throughout much of the US, blacks and whites, especially teens, are equalizing in tastes and desires. But in the South, there's still a pretty large distinction in what each group likes.
It's not racism, it's just that a lot of the 'Whites' would prefer to dance to Garth Brooks at their Prom, and a lot of the 'Blacks' would prefer to listen to 50-cent.
I never went to my Prom, but if I had, I'd rather have gone to one catered to what I liked, than some generic party that tryed to please everyone and failed in all respects. Which is what happened at this "Integrated Prom".
