Is the water pump that keeps failing an issue with Zetecs too?

ok, does this sound like a good reason for the pump impellar failures? my friend who is a parts manager at ford says that "antifreeze turns acidy after a while and eats the plastic". if this is true or even false, common sense would tell any car manufacturer not to use plastic for internal parts!!! hey, maybe i could invent some ultra light weight plastic rods and pistons and sell them to ford!

No teeth marks found during my two recent autopsies. Radial stress/fatigue cracks usually start along the line of the two "leak holes" and then flying bits mush each other up.

Any tips on changing the Pump? Is it that simple three bolts, dump the coolant, put the new one on, fill coolant? Should I change the thermostat? I'm going to do mine this weekend.

Jack up front. Remove lower shield behind front bumper. Drain coolant from radiator "screw" on lower passenger side.

Remove battery. If there is a pad under the battery lift it up.
Remove the small curved hose that goes from the thermostat housing to the front pipe that runs across. This will give you room, and allow the thermostat to be changed. Remove the connector from the auto trans, and tuck out of the way.
Remove the belt and tensioner. Gives you room.

If you are just planning to replace the front pump, you can then remove all the bolts. Use a 1/4" drive and deep socket. Check the cone. If not tight, replace complete housing. Check other posts for more tips. Good luck.
