Hello,

Was getting my oil changed at a local garage yesterday and the mechanic called me out to look at my tires, which are on their way out, but claimed that the Black Magic Tire shine that I use is eating away at the outer wall of the tire. I have been useing these products for years and have never heard of anything like this. Just curiouse if anyone else had heard about this. The guy told me to stop using this product right away. Any feed back or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pick up Haynes manual/Ford Service CD and change your own oil from now on!

If Black Magic/Meguires/Armor All made a tire shine product that damaged tires, they wouldn't be in business because of lawsuits. Maybe it is because your tires are "on their way out".

I noticed this, too, but I wasn't sure if it was just natural aging.

One thing to note: you will never see dressing on race tires. IIRC, it has a tendency to harden the rubber, which I suppose, could lead to cracking. On a race tire, this could be a performance issue if the stuff is getting on the actual tread. For a street tire, it wouldn't matter as any "damage" would not cause tire failure, and the customer wants shiny tires. Doubt there's any lawsuit danger.

Anyway, just speculation.

If somebody did mass-market a tire product that eats tires, it wouldn't be the first time. For instance, there's a liquid puncture seal product called Slime or something like that -- it's green, has little white fibers in it, and does a marvelous job of stopping leaks quickly. But I soon learned not to put it in my bicycle tires: any inner tube with that stuff in it would split wide open a few months later. Yet after ten more years the stuff is still being sold.

Ive never had a problem with that slime in my bike or motorcycle. And I have had both for several years and the tires seem to be in the same shape with the exception of your normal wear and tear.

Well, pretty much all wheel cleaners on the market will attack either the clearcoat on the wheel, or the plastic of the center cap or both.

All tire manufautures advise not to use tire shine products becuase of the petrolium distilites in them. I believe that is the reason.

Actually, I HAVE heard of this before. Don't remember the specifics, but some tire shine products (over a period of time) ARE bad for your tires.
