i just took it out yesterday and replaced it with the metal impellar water pump from BAT. dont let this happen to your contique, replace yours now even if your stock one is fine. surprisingly i squeezed 70,000 miles out of mine before it fell apart. i cant believe this thing had fins on it at one time lol.

My own experience posted mid-May for my '97. I'll be adding details of the '98 failure, which happened yesterday, when I count up the impeller pieces tomorrow.

Changed mine today at 43,700 miles. Looked brand new. Put in the Napa pump with metal impeller. Some clean anti-freeze and a new thermostat with a "burp hole" so it's a bit easier to refill the system and not leave big air pockets in there.

TB Explain please, as thermostats usually have a small hole that allows coolant to circulate thru' them in the closed position. Also system is supposed to be self-burping via hose from top of rad and small 'T' hose tap on main hose close to thermostat area; both of which go to air in reservoir.

I'm only @ 65000 km on my 1998 mystique. So to me it feels a little premature to be worried about my plastic impeller. But how long do you think I can safely procrastinate doing the preventative maintenance?
thanks, jca

85,000 Km to 100,000 Km. Some last longer, some don't. It's not very hard to warp an aluminum head. You should change the waterpump below that window or you could be in trouble. When mine went, the bearings in the pulley were squealing. I doubt the impeller died, but I had the whole thing changed anyway.

Yes, I checked the cone, but thanks for bringing up that most important point Terry.
Didn't notice the little hole on the factory thermostat. In fact, this is the first in my 21 years of shadetree wrenching on cars that I've even noticed such a thing.
I had always used the old mechanics trick of using 2 or three asprin to block open the thermostat, so you could easily fill and burp the system.
