Yes, definately a 3+ hour job on the contour if you have never done it before. Get your motorcraft rebuilt alternator from http://www.fordpartsonline.com/ If they only want $170 for the install, like PA 3L said, get it in writing!!! For that price, I am not sure if you want to do it yourself, unless you have a nice size toolkit, and access to a lift. Search around for some very recent alternator threads, and PM me if you need help... -Nick

Question remaining; is the battery shot as well, or did it check OK after a charge?

battery checked out fine....
They said time and time again that it was 170 but i will get it in writing in the morning. Advance Auto got the alternator for 220 minus the 50 bucks when i bring the old one in ,,, 170 isn't bad. The guy at the shop said that he looked and was surprised at how hard it is to get at it but is convinced that he will do it under 3 hours...we'll see what happens! pretty sure i'll get screwed and frustrated at some point before it's all over... leaving for Germany in a week, dont need this crap right now!!
