I want to remove the rear reflector panel do the license plate screw repair. All the search posts I found only refer to removing the four nuts under the trunk lid. I tried this but the panel still seems to be held at the outboard ends. Are there clips that I cannot see holding the outboard ends of the panel? I am afraid to pry on this to get it off. How is this panel held? The Ford shop manual offers nothing. The car is a 1998 Mystique.

I just did this last month... There weren't any clips that I remember; just four or six bolts. That and a little arm strength since the reflector was stuck to the trunk pretty good.

Same here. Nothing more than the screws in the trunk lid.

OK,
I did manage to get the panel off. To do it I removed the four nuts. I then pryed the panel off carefully. There are 6 push pins (3 on each side) that hold the panel on at the outboard ends. These pins are for ease of assembly at the factory. I found it easiest to get the tips of my fingers over the top of the panel and pull but it still came off hard.
