The shifter in my car seems to be really tough to use. whenever i go to change from park to drive or whatever it takes more effort to move it than seems necessary like its stuck. its a 95 mercury mystique ATX. is this supposed to be tough move on our cars or is there something wrong. thank you.

same thing happened to my fathers '01 sonnata GLS. the atx shifter was just harder to use and move through the gears.

Before getting worried (especially if the car still drives fine), see if the shifter or the linkage is gunked up with something. In my last car (non-Ford), all it took to cause this was a couple drops of coffee dripping into the shifter area to get it sticky.

the sonnata still drives fine (quite nice, actually, its fast!) its a possibility that something spilled in the shifter area, my father lives in his car, driving from MA to parts of NH, ME, and CT daily.

Is the lock lever holding it back? When you apply the brake, the lever drops allowing you to move the selector into R to D. When it gets dirty or dried out it will hang up or drop real slow. Clean it with electronic parts cleaner and place a small drop of lube on the hinge pins.
