I used a file - if you can find one just the right size it'll take you a few minutes. Just make sure you get one that is coarse enough.

For the price, the Silverstars are the best. I am currently running APC's hyper Whites and they are damn white and holding up pretty well (1 years and still working), but I trust Sylvania's bulbs much more.

I just put the 9005 Silverstars in last night. I used a small wirecutter to remove (nibble away at) the ridges in the bulb. It took just a few snips at each one to get rid of them. Just be careful not to take too much away with each "bite", or you may crack the plastic shell. As far as brightness, they are a bit brighter than what I had in there (a Narva "white light" or something, and a Sylvania Cool Blue), both 9006 bulbs. I was hoping they would be brighter, since the lumen output spec. that came with the bulbs was 1700 for the 9005, and only 1000 for the 9006. There's a +/- tolerance for each of them also, though. Also, that's the FMVSS spec., not the bulbs' spec. Anyway, they're pretty bright, and they go well with the PIAA high beams I have. These cost alot less than the PIAAs (which I've had for a few years) and I'll replace them with Silverstars when they go.

doesn't "higher Wattage"="burnt sockets" in the long run?? just wondering... i hesitated doing this mod for these reasons... think i caught the issue in the ARCHIVES. So i went cheap with EURO-LITEs 9006, and the matching fogs. Put em in October. Other CEG'rs say they burn out quick... been about 8 months for me and still going. The bulb is blue and looks ricer, but had my lady drive my SVT behind me in her car, and it looks white with a slight hint of blue... and compliments the EUROLITE foggie bulbs i put in because those are totally white... I later removed the yellow reflector and stuck clear sylvannia's in the turn signal, which STILL apears to be yellow-- till you signal. i got the 9006's for $18.00 for a pair... i think the fogs were thesame price off some website.

Hmmm.... Just looked at some bulb-to-reflector mounting diffs between the 9005's & 9006's:

1 - The small mounting ear on the plastic bulb base, opposite the connector, is mirror-imaged on the 2 bulb types (fixable by judicious snipping of the offending portion of the ear, see Shawn95's post).

2 - The outside diameter of the o-ring seal is smaller on the 9005 than on the 9006 by about 2mm. I'd think that this would allow moisture & contaminants into the headlight housing, crapping up the Aluminum deposition on the reflector.

Anyone got any thoughts about this potential problem?

Kurt

Ths Silverstar 9005's will not burn out the sockets since they are normal high beam bulbs and if you look at the wiring, low beam and high beam wiring use the same exact guage wiring.

Now if you stuck those illegal high wattage bulbs in there, then you would toast the wiring nicely.

This is so irritating. After the Silverstars came out I posted a ? about them. Not one single person said anything about putting the highs in the low beam and everyone made it sound like they were so great. I got them and was not impressed. Then a week later people are bragging about highs in the lows. If you do get the Silverstars, don't get the 9006. Waste of money.

I dunno what to tell you. I bought my SVT back on 6/15/02 and knew about the highs in the lows back then then from doing an engine search on headlights. I swapped the bulbs out on the 3rd day of owning the car b/c the headlights sucks so bad.
