This morning my 99 se sport ran out of gas, but the light had just came on. I put 2 gallons in and all the sudden I have a 1/4 tank. Last week when I was getting in the 1/8 tank range I could not accelerate, it would not let the rpms go above 2k. Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks.

Welcome to the CEG! laugh

I'm no expert but the first thing I would do is replace the fuel filter.
I also read in the manual that you should avoid running out of gas because it may cause harm to the Cat!

Low fuel in tank with bad gage readings and poor performance usually is the fuel pump........

Ford has never been noted for accurate fuel gauges, at least not in any of the FoMoCo products I have driven (and that cover the last 30 years). When the gauge gets down to the 1/4 mark, it is time to get thee to a fuel station.

My past experience with an intank fuel pump after running out of gas was that it died soon after. With that in mind, you might want to go ahead and replace it while it is more convenient...the in-tank pump does not lend itself to a do-it-yourself at the side of the road like the older mechanical pumps, and when the Mustang pump died, it was a very sudden death eek

Running out of gas most likely damaged an already questionable fuel pump. The sending unit might be dorked as well from the way you explained the problem.

Thanks for the advise, I was plannig on replacing fuel filter anyways, and now just replace pump while I'm at it.

I don't use my fuel gauge anymore(close call). I cover the thing up with my sunglass bag thing so I don't look at it. I just set my trip odometer everytime i fill it. Go 500 kms or app 300 miles=time for petrol mate! laugh

Same here, except I didn't cover the dash any. I would likely get in trouble with cops if I did!

It always annoys me though when my sister & dad go get gas - they don't reset the trip then it's another 50 miles before I notice. (But then, the upside is that I don't pay for gas.)

My gas gauge reads Full for approximately 70-90 miles!!
