I see, I was just trying to help w/ the milage issue. I really don't know if the larger speedo will read accurately in the smaller one w/o some calibration. As far as fitting, it will swap over, although like I said, it will probably need to be re calibrated for the smaller face.

do the cd-rom service guides come with schematics for the instrument cluster? if so, is there anyone on this site that would be willing to sell me one for the 98 year cars? thanks!

There are NO component-level (capacitors/resistors/chips/etc) schematics on the CD-ROM (or on paper, for that matter).

Everything is treated as a replaceable assembly, no component-level troubleshooting/repair is done at the dealership level so no diagrams are available.

As far as the VSS goes, most Ford VSS output 8000 pulses per mile (based on 1000 turns of the speedometer cable per mile, if equipped, and 8 pulses per revolution).

This is standard because Ford has been using 1000 revs/mile speedometers since the 70s at least.

That sucks! so can I swap the speedometer boards and recalibrate the needle to work correctly with the smaller face? or am I just wasting my time? at this point, I'm not even sure if the problem is with the speedometer. it could be something else for all I know. thanks for all your help and if anyone has any further advice, I'll gladly take it.
