I'm having some fluids leaking on the left side of my engine. I'm assuming that it's oil considering the last time i changed my oil, only 2.5 quarts came out when it takes about 6. I'll probably bring it into the dealership, but i was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be that's leaking on the left side of my engine or if anyone else has had this problem. the fluid is black and feels exactly like oil, but then again it could be a dark color cause the ground is dirty. but i doubt that. thx in advance.

A person who is so careless and so negligent and so generally clueless about car maintenance that he would let his car run so low on oil, shouldn't be allowed to own a Ford.

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX.  No mods. (Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

 eek

Uhm, well dip your finger in it and take a look at/smell your finger, does that look and smell like there's oil on it? Next, remove the dipstick and check to see if your oil level is low... If it is you could probably assume it's oil.. If it IS oil, you may want to keep an eye on it's level (via the aformentioned dipstick).

Running the car w/o oil is bad mmmmmkay?

wash and zaino won't stop that beautiful peice of machinery from siezing into a 500lb paperweight man!!! I noticed some oil spots on the side of my motor as well, coming from the valve cover gasket...isn't leaking anymore, if it was at all. As far as 2.5 qts of oil coming out of your motor...that is very, very bad. I mean...damn. The only thing I can think of is you emptied your tranny of fluid...but then...that would have melted byn ow f it were empty, unless you drive absolutely nowhere. Dude get it looked at if you can' tdo it yourself...you're going to kill that poor car!

w3rd laugh No oil will kill the thing. How long since you last checked it? Like if you changed the oil, then drove 10,000 miles before realizing it was down to 2.5 qts, well then you may be burning some, which wouldn't be the end of the world (hell, mine burns about a qt every 1,500 miles which albeit not a good sign, ford considers it "normal").. Just keep an eye on it..

NA, I ONLY DROVE ABOUT 2000 MILES ON IT. I LIKE TO CHANGE IT FREQUENTLY. I TREAT IT PRETTY WELL, IT JUST THAT I FORGET SOMETIMES.

And a person who has to undercut someone for their lack of knowledge deserves a nice smack on the back of the head. Perhaps this person that started the thread is not truly an enthuisast, but joined the site for some tech help and problem solving. Do me a favor the next time you post, will you? Advance your maturity by about 15 years and say something useful. It's up to people like us to educate the people who don't know about cars, not just bash them for their lack of knowledge.
