Spiders gears are the gears INSIDE the differential, on "open" differentials, as installed in most vehicles, including the Contour. Usually if you break a spider gear it'll cause a jam in the diff case thus causing it to explode, so it's a chain effect.

LSD's like the Quiafe do not use gears inside the case, just clutch plates, so in essence they are NOT "real differentials" as it cannot bias the torque from one side to the other, it actually just forces a 50-50 split of the torque to both wheels, and can force up to 80% of the torque to one wheel in loss traction situations.
