Hi, I get a CEL that tests out as cam shaft positioning sensor. According to dealer, sensor probably not problem because the engine is running fine. Computer 'checked' out ok, went ahead and had them replace sensor. CEL came back on.

Questions: I need to get car state inspected (Texas), would anyone have any insight whether the CEL (cam shaft) would prevent a pass? The guy doing the inspection claims that for the inspection to pass, no error codes can be present.

True?

Dealer hasn't been able to isolate apparent actual cause of the CEL.

98 CSVT. (built 10/97) 75k miles.

I had that same CEL code come up right after I bought my CSVT. I replaced the cam pos sensor myself (very easy, very accessible-took two minutes), pulled one of those fuses to clear the codes, and it never came back on. I later had some other work done, which involved the dealer pulling codes, and they never mentioned anything about a code for the cam pos sensor code being stored in there or anything. Problem solved.

However, I *was* told that a bad cam pos sensor can cause the fuel/air mixture to go wacko, which could cause flame in the exhaust, which could mess up your cats and 02 sensors...but who knows?

Thanks, I'll think I'll try a reset. Put some miles ont the car and try for the inspection again.
