"Gearbox" is associated with RWD cars when the box houses just the "tranny" gears.
My Dad's Dad called it a "Gearbox" and he worked for "Star" motors in Wolverhampton in 1910, I wonder what Henry called it, Who Cares , well I suppose Demon does,
And godblessim for it. Demon's mania for detail and technical correctness is what makes him one of this site's main assets.
BTW: I don't think there was much talk of FWD or transaxles in Wolverhampton or anywhere else in 1910. I think the hot topic back then was Leaf-Springs.
