The smae thing happened to JVT's car once and a clip or something came off, or was never installed (just recently had tranny work done). He could only use 3 and 4 since the cble that controls the gate came unhooked. Seems like just the opposite happened to you, the cable for the forward and back movement came unhooked, while the cable for the gate (side to side) is still hooked up. I know that probably doesn' make any sense but I cant think of a way to describe it over the keyboard. 
Hopefully it is just a linkage problem and nothing more serious.

Yeah, totally agree. That's a half hour tops of just playing with the cheap crappy little orange and white (or was it blue and white??) plastic linkage adjuster. It's free and be the difference between having all gears or literally nothing at all.
