I would guess it would since second gear is still engaged, it wont allow you to change the gate. You could probably put the shifter into 1st gear position, but it would not do anything as the cable is unhooked or broken. The smae thing happened to JVT's car once and a clip or something came off, or was never installed (just recently had tranny work done). He could only use 3 and 4 since the cble that controls the gate came unhooked. Seems like just the opposite happened to you, the cable for the forward and back movement came unhooked, while the cable for the gate (side to side) is still hooked up. I know that probably doesn' make any sense but I cant think of a way to describe it over the keyboard. Hopefully it is just a linkage problem and nothing more serious.

I agree with that diagnosis, doctor

It sounds like what thers have described...a shifter linkage problem. Cause if the syncros were really stuck in second gear, even if the clutch was good it would not disengage. the Mtx 75 has a problme with the little balls at the end of the cable....it seems they like to break off and leave you hanging in in the gear your last in.
If the shifter cable is the problem, i reconmend buying the Focus shifter tower with the focus cables...WAY more stonger and seems a little easier to shift with it too. Thats what i ahve on my tranny.
Second thing that could have happend is that on a hard shift, there is a bolt on the tranny that could come loose and drop in your syncros and cause your trans to lock in a gear, or blow the who thing up......As to what to do, i reconmend sending it to a trusted transmission shop for an estimate...either way your going to be paying money unless you have a original warrenty. those ESP's are worth [censored]!!! they don;t help yopu in my opinion. unless you mechanicly inclinded and can do it your slelf.
let me know if you need any more help.

Check to see if that bolt shear off with the linkage. If it did drop in, find a magnetic wand and see if you can fish it out before id damages any gears or blows the diff.

Yeah, totally agree. That's a half hour tops of just playing with the cheap crappy little orange and white (or was it blue and white??) plastic linkage adjuster. It's free and be the difference between having all gears or literally nothing at all.

Taking it to Ford tomorrow! since I got the warrnety its probably best to take it to them. It seems as though the problem could be simple to fix with little labor or it could be hard to fix with lots of labor. I do thank you guys for your help.

Broken cable or cables. PITA to replace the cable assembly, but not too expensive.
Just pray you did not break the pin "inside" the tranny. $$$ (Unless we are talking warranty work here)
