well i have blown timing belts before on other cars. my friend has a 1991 subaru leg. wagon. we blew his timing belt at 70 mph (i was driving) he had a manual, so as soon as i felt the engine running wierd (almost immedeately) i shut it off and we coasted to a stop. mechanic said if i had waited another 50 feet or so to turn it off, the #4 piston would have hit the head, causing a [censored] engine blow. the enigne had 230,000 mile on it.

but to be safe i started having mine checked every 6 months after i hit 60,000 miles.
