but mine does make that slapping noise on cold starts. also the fan clutch is acting up again... should i be worried about that belt slapping the cover?

Mine did the same thing when it was cold but like i said i had it the serpentine belt and water pump all changed. I honestly dont know what to tell ya to worry about it breaking anything I just know if the belt breaks it can cuase some major damage to the motor. So I personaly would get it fixed as soon as yoru cash flow allows.

well i have blown timing belts before on other cars. my friend has a 1991 subaru leg. wagon. we blew his timing belt at 70 mph (i was driving) he had a manual, so as soon as i felt the engine running wierd (almost immedeately) i shut it off and we coasted to a stop. mechanic said if i had waited another 50 feet or so to turn it off, the #4 piston would have hit the head, causing a [censored] engine blow. the enigne had 230,000 mile on it.

but to be safe i started having mine checked every 6 months after i hit 60,000 miles.

I think the Zetec engine is non-interference. So the worst thing that can happen if your timing belt breaks is that you get stuck somewhere.

I have 103K on my contour, and 106K on my mystique. As far as I know, both belts are original. I do get the tapping noise when the belts hit the cover, but otherwise they look good.

They are non-interference... Ask Adam (demonictour) in the South Central forum... His timing belt broke while he was driving and there was no damage to the engine... the car just stopped going. His is a 95 zetec contour. In fact he just had to have the tensioner pulley replaced on the timing belt as it wasn't replaced when the timing belt was. There was nothing left of the bearings in the pulley, they were completely disentigrated(sp). I think his tour had 100 and some odd thousand on it when the belt broke and it has now around 120k or so w/ the tensioner pulley being just replaced. As far as we know that pulley was the original pulley too. The shop that did my timing belt said that the tensioner pulley should be replaced at the same time. I guess it's preventative maintenance. works for me.

Just had mine done...

101k on the Mystique. I asked them repeatedly about the pullies and the tensioner. They said they all looked good. Got an updated cover, much, much better. If I could figure out how to post pictures I would put it up here...

My daughter's 96 Contour lasted until 88,000...the belt and tensioner were both replaced. My Mystique has 91,000 and is still going strong, although in cold weather there is a bit of slap until it warms up.
