No longer made by GMB ???? Still Metal? For those who have bought a water pump, the cone that seems to come loose and break the impeller. Is it part of the pump or is it fastened to the housing? Yes you're correct, I haven't lost my water pump yet. I figure I'm pushing my luck! 98 built 7/97 but only 38000.
Thanks Paul

the cone is part of the rear housing, set in place by a few punches in the aluminum of the rear housing (punches put pressure on the cone, holding it in place). if you buy a pump other than a ford OE you will not be getting the rear housing with the newly pressed in cone. aftermarket pumps only come with the front half of the pump with the impeller.

NAPA has the same pump as AutoZone-the GMB w/ metal impeller. Cheaper, too.

thanks guys SVTour98 I like you thinking or is that style -- "root cause analysis". Dealer wants $115 and has short hoses attached. Latest part number of the last three updates. XS2Z-8501CC Motocraft P405 this is the 4th edition? this way I can take the old apart and some do some "RCA". Of course being an old phoneman what do I know, well I'm about to learn. I'll share my findings in a couple of weeks, for those interested. Paul
Is it possible to weld/reinforce or some process to insure it wouldn't come lose? Well decrease the chance? Was it orignally stamped???

well....i wouldn't trust using JB Weld on it, especially since it's part of the cooling system. when i originally took apart my pump to see if my impeller was ok (maintenance) i found the problem with the cone. i punched the aluminum housing about 20 times around the cone to hold it in place (as opposed to the 5 or 6 original ones i saw) because it was on a sunday and i couldn't get to the ford dealer to buy the pump. it held in place for a good 6 months i'd say and came loose again about a month ago. i took it to ford and had the replace the entire unit (under extended warranty).

Well it's changed, jeeze I hate those hose clamps. Need to invest in one of those dingusadapter wrenches? Well didn't need to change it, everything looked fine, matter of fact the cone in the original looks better seated that the new one. Did have grease running down the face under the shaft? Is that a packed bearing? Almost looks like wheel bearing grease. original black impeller and new is tan. Paul

I bought an Autozone waterpump, had to order it, not in stock. Its not still metal, plastic impeller. I installed it anyway. I need the car that badly.
That metal cone I just pressed back into place, did I need to punch it back in, it seemes kinda loose. I did this just this morning.

Water pump I'm installing in my '97 came in box with brand name Tredex (part # NP1576). It's a new pump (only, not housing) with date code Jan 18/02 on box and pump itself is stamped "GMB Japan" on pulley, casting and shaft. I understand from my local automotive suppler that Tredex is located in Quebec but the pump had to be shipped from US warehouse(arrived overnight). I had specified metal impeller. In the past week I have now held pumps with impellers that are black (my original shattered one), tan and white (reman by Fenco) and the Holy Grail ....metal (new by Tredex).

I can tell you that both my cones are very well seated and very tight. Clean as if new inside. Not sure if the cone was stainless if it solve the problem? Galvanic currents maybe between the aluminum and the anodized steel cone. No idea what the coating is? I'm assuming this could be enough to loosen the cone? Corrosion. Never having done any lab tests involving dissimilar metals, I have heard that it is possible that the corrosion material is mixing with the coolant. I solution as to be invisible. So all we see is the cone becoming loose. ?????Terry what do think?????? Any experience with this??? Paul The Dex-cool type antifreeze (drained) looked as clear as new from two years ago. The only thing that bugs me is the grease that was drooling out of the shaft??

Just a couple of thoughts. First if it's the GMB that has the metal impeller, Carparts.com has it for $53.46, shipping to me would be $7.31, but your milage may vary.
Also in the June issue of Car & Driver there's an article about which anti-freeze to use and there was one quick line that said that Ford's used it for a brief while but then stopped. They basically don't recommend using the Orange antifreeze (Dex-Cool) unless the car came with it. It may eat older style radiators with lead solder.
