I'd go with a single 12" sub and a 4ch amp, which is definately doable for $300. Run the fronts to your stockers (which actually sound decent when run with some good power and a high pass crossover set around 150Hz) and run the sub off the rears.

It's the best of both worlds. You'll be surprised at the difference a modest amp will make with the stock speakers.
