You are %100 wrong on this one. The insulin spikes caused by eating sugary foods have a huge effect on your metabolism...

When blood-sugar levels are optimal, the body uses more fat for fuel and less sugar. Optimal blood-sugar levels, and the benefits such as fat-burning that go along with them, are easily attained by paying careful attention to what you eat. Low-glycemic meals and snacks containing balanced macronutrients -- carbohydrate, protein and fat - help maintain optimal blood-sugar levels.
On the other hand, eating meals and snacks with a high glycemic index or which contain too much carbohydrate can easily disrupt blood-sugar balance. This can prompt excess insulin production, which in turn may lower blood sugar too drastically.
In the short run the result of eating high-glycemic foods is low physical and mental energy, decreased fat-burning, increased fat storage and often cravings, usually for more carbohydrates. If you give in to these cravings you simply refuel the cycle. And if you don't eat anything at all, you just feel worse. In the long term, the repeated overproduction of insulin may also lead to serious diseases such as diabetes.
Obviously the reduced energy levels and weight gain can have negative effects on your day-to-day life. The better choice is to maintain optimal blood-sugar levels by consistently fueling your body with low-glycemic, balanced-macronutrient meals and snacks.
