well, I think Mark got about 35K miles on the s/c before I got the car and the s/c is trashed. The main shaft or spline out of the supercharger is completely stripped. This is the shaft

I have another s/c so it's not a big deal, right? Well I started thinking and since the male end is trashed I'm betting the female end is trashed too. I don't have a spare female end and I don't think it's easy to remove. Anyone know if the female connector is easy to inspect, or do I have to pull the shaft that runs the lenth of the motor out? That looks like a serious PITA.

I should have the actual pics up in a few hours. On a side note I pulled it in under 2 hours, not too bad. I'm so freeking pissed right now. I missed a car show last Sunday and I have another in 5 days. the weather is perfect and I'm stuck driving my POS "Ted Nugent" toyota while my dream car sits in pieces.

Is this s/c the one with the most miles? Hope for you guys that this isn't a common problem

well here she is, the stripped shaft

It seams the shaft splines are VERY shallow, and the engagement into the driveshaft should be deeper as well.

Well, I had been discussing with Vortech my options of replacing my shaft (it is fine, but is an original production, so its a matter of time), needless to say they we not helpfull. Upon inspection, the female end is pressed on the actual shaft. Original claims that they were not heat treated properly. Looks like they used harded stainless steel for the female end.

I found my solution to the shaft drive problem, I have a machine shop replacing the end in question and also adding an additional bearing at the end where the two shafts meet (one similar to the case near the pulley.) At any rate this should easily fix the female end problem. Why vortech did not do this in the first place is beyond me as there is room for an additional bearing.

Another thing I noticed about the shaft is that is was not centered inside the outer chasis, I bought mine second hand so maybe this occured from de-installation, but one thing is for sure, if that shaft is not centered, it will cause premature wear due to pressure points on part of the shaft.

BTW I think you are the first to have the male end strip.

Mine did the exact same thing not too long after I first installed. Sent it back to vortech and it was fixed under warranty. Wish I had kept the picture, it looked exactly like yours.

I can say, that in all honesty, what with being a drive/axle shaft engineer who designs splines/shafts for a living, that those maels splines aren't even heat treated. STUPID! No matter what, unless both parts are heat treated, the harder one will eat the softer one. And just from looking at your pic, there is no way that the male spline is heat treated!

Vortech are retarded. Whoever designed that shaft doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground!

Spline depth is not the issue here........

I agree heat treat is needed, but if they want to skip that they can at least make a deeper spline. Another thing is that the female end only mates with 2/3 of the male end. I thought vortech ran precision specs... that female end should cover the whole male end....

That is EXACTLY how my s/c shaft looks too. Mine had way less mile when it happened though. Vortech is fixing/replacing under warranty right now.

I'm curious, does the SC spin freely?
