Hi. Just noticed now that the clock is not illuminated. The clock seems to be working and I can set and change the time, however, just is not illuminated. The entire dashboard lights up when the headlight switch is turned on. Is it a simple burnt out fuse? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is probably a burned out bulb. The bulb is easy to change once you have the clock out. If I recall correctly you must remove the dash bezel to get to the clock on your Mystique.
The bulb with it's holder just twists into the back of the clock. Don't forget to transfer the green colored sleeve to the new bulb. The bulb is an usual size. I have not found a source for the bulb other than the dealer. It runs about $4.00 to $6.00.

Big Jim's advice and recollection are right on. I replaced in both cars within a week of each other, the Mystique being more time consuming because of the bezel. See below.
Edit @ 7:00am: Following assumes tilt. To remove bezel (instrument panel finish panel) Ford manual says disconnect ground/remove panel/release clock clips/remove clock.
My experience. Gently pry out 3 retaining screw covers/remove screws including 3 above guages/wiggle panel-tilt steering to remove and clock mounts become visible.

I had the same problem with my 98.5 contour. The clock on the 'tour just pops out with a small flathead screwdriver. Ford just had to try to make it hard to replace the bulb, they soldered it to the holder and only sell the bulb/holder combo. But...you can replace it with a #74 bulb (available at any autoparts store or wal-mart). Just solder it in or I just wedged mine in and haven't had any problems.

You're all lucky with the Contour clocks! I've replaced my bulb twice since I've owned the car, and with the 96 Mystique you have to remove the whole instrument bezel. Fortunately they last awhile.

I installed the bulb. Maybe I wasn't as technically or mechanically inclined as I thought I would be, because I broke the damn holders that hold the rubber piece on the dash bezel and the steering column.
Another note, is there a part number for the green sleeve for the bulb? Otherwise, I'll have to go back to the dealer and see if they can locate one for me. I couldn't get the sleeve off the old bulb and eventually tore the thing off.
Really had a crappy time putting the whole thing back again.

horseydug, no, your instructions were great. Had no problem taking the bezel off. Just when I tried to put it back, the tilt/steering column and the rubber piece caused the problem. And when the holder for the rubber piece broke, I had to use super glue and electrical tape to hold the rubber piece together. The bad thing is I have to take the bezel off again to put the green sleeve on the bulb.
