Hey guys. I'm extremely new to this site and to working on cars at all. I just bought a 1996 Contour SE with the factory tape player installed. I was thinking about adding a single CD player just below it in the open space. My questions are:

1) Can this be done?

2) Is there a CD player (non-changer)made that will pull power from the original stereo? In other words, is there a cd player available without it's own power button, but will power on using like an auxilary switch from the factory stereo?

Again, I'm an extreme newbie so be easy on me.

I bought a Ford CD Player from a 96 Mustang for my 1995 Ford Contour Gl, but when I tried to install it I had a BIG PROBLEM , my car doesn't come with "Premium Sound" so it was perfect for my original stereo but never worked. So try to get some advice from an expert before doing anything. You will know if yours has it just checking the door panels, left in the bottom you will see the word " Stereo " or " Premium Sound " Good Luck.

Tobah.

I'm not aware of any "add on" CD players out there. You have two options. One is to get a "Diskman" type portable CD player with the car kit and use it to play CD's through your cassette player. The other option is to replace your factory radio/tape deck with a newer unit with CD player. You can buy new CD players for around $100, or you can look around for a used factory unit that somebody may have for sale.

-Mark- '99 Mystique LS, totally original (including the original water pump and the premium stereo)! Bought new in December 1998 for $21,000. 208,000 miles
