As many of you know, I have been a troll for a while now, but last night on the way to work......my Malibu died. So I pulled off of the freeway, and I tried to start it again. There is a clicking noise, and I usually here the Fuel pump start when I put turn the key on. But for some reason I dont hear it. Should I be hearing it? Once or twice out of 30 times, it will start but will immediately die.
Any thoughts? I am broke, so diagnostics at a shop is out of the question.
Thanks in advance!

I would suspect the fuel pump first. Every newer vehicle I have driven you can hear it prime itself when the key is turned to on.

Thanks for the response! I figured the Fuel Pump but dont have the money to change it right now. I guess I will use my friends dealership discount and buy one and do the labor myself. We have a lift handy, but what if it isnt the fuel pump? How in the world would I go about troubleshooting for this problem?

You could probably also consider the fuel pump relay. That you could test with a voltmeter at the power block. I don't know where it is located in the Malibu though. frown

A pressure guage would do it if you pull pressure off of a fuel line. laugh A Chiltons would tell you what you need to be at.

I would consider having the car looked at, rather than change something on it that might be working fine... You don't have to have them fix the problem, only figure out what it is... (though it does sound like a fuel or ignition problem..)

Cheers,
Tom

if you say your getting a clicking sound when you crank it sounds like your altenator failed and you ran the battery dead, you probably dont have enough voltage to power anything, if you let the car sit and go out and start it it will run till the battery dies, put a volt meter on it, see what your chaging at

Ya, the clicking comment makes me suspect the battery, too. They'll just drop on you like that sometimes...

Not sure where you live, but I bet the heat is already claiming battery lives here in AZ

Good luck

I posted this in the N.Cali section too, but unfortunately I figured it out.......I had it towed too the night it happened, what a waste of time!

My fuse for the stereo blew....the JET PCM was powered by that fuse as well. Since the PCM was bypassed through the MAF and TPS. Well, if there is no power to the PCM the car saw no power to the TPS. Is that sounding stupid? Cause this is a guess, and I replaced the fuse and relocated my power relay for the PCM and the car runs just fine.....sometimes better!
WTF, I was scared of a fuel pump problem too :p
