Thso are patheticly slow I had one come up to me at a light and start revving his engine looking over at me. It sounded like he had aftermarket intake and I saw the fart-pipe exhaust so he had a little in to it. After I stopped laughing at the sound of his engine and his car for that matter I procedded to get to the speed limit alot faster than he did and that was shifting at like 5000-5500. He had to be 2-3 lengths back. Point is buy a used gti or something along those lines, because those cars suck.

A 250hp version of the Lancer Evolution VII is coming to America this fall as a 2003 model. It's going to have a 4g63 engine with a fmic. Since they waited so long, Subaru is rumored to be releasing an Impreza WRX STi with 280hp to stay a step ahead of Mitsubishi. I'm getting one or the other next year. I love 4g63s but might want something different.

The regular Lancer is yawn-inducingly average. Even the OZ Rally Edition with drum rear brakes...

Mitsubishi has had a lot of trouble making their stuff as reliable as the big three Japanese makes do.

Last I checked, the Eclipse has been one of the most unreliable Japanese models available... not to mention being a "sporty" coupe that can't handle nearly as well as other sport coupes, not to mention a certain family sedan we know of.

Mitsubishi is the world's largest producer of turbochargers yet hasn't had a single turbocharged model in their US lineup since 2000. If I was to get a Lancer, I'd seriously wait for the Evolution VII.

The new 2000+ Eclipse is indeed a pile of unreliable hideous trash built to compete with Grand Ams. According to JD Power, Consumer Reports, and the like anyway. I'd rather get hit by one than be seen driving it (though I've actually driven more than one). Mitsubishi totally ruined everything the Eclipse stood for (TURBO!!!, available AWD). They should have called it something else (Craplipse?) and brought the fwd FTO to the US with a 4g63 and called it the Eclipse.

Anyway, if the Lancer turns out to be even half as reliable as the new Eclipse is reportedly, I'd avoid it like the plague. The styling isn't much to write about either... Mitsubishi does, and has had a reputation for being unreliable. I own one, and have been lucky for 4 years while beating the crap outta my GSX. If you want a compact 4-door look at the Hyundai Elantra GT, seriously.

Unless something new was released in the last few weeks that's not true.

According the Mistu & Motor Trend (IIRC) it will be the undiluted real deal. 300+ HP (don't believe the 276 Japanese rating for a second!), aluminum body panels, BREMBO's, Active AWD, etc...

BTW - all EVO's have had the 4G63. Engine's been around well before even the DSM's.

Unless they bring the real deal over it will just be a big disappointment like the WRX was/is...

POS.

If you want all those options you listed, get a used SVT. OR, a late model SE with the V6 for even less. You could probably find one with low miles, and if you're interested you can get the Ford ESP up to 100k.

The Elantra GT is a 5-door, but they're troublesome (worse than average) too. A warranty doesn't mean much. The trouble is to take it in to get fixed.

The Protege is the clear winner in this class once price, driving, and reliability are factored.
