Hi All,

My Contour has 107,560 miles on it. I had it used, so I have no ideal that the original water pump had being replaced before or not. I am now preparing myself for replacing it. Based on the Haynes manual, the water pump hiding behind the timing belt, so I need to remove the timing belt first. I am intimated to remove the timing and additional attention is needed for the cramshaft position when putting back on the belt. I replaced a water pump on a GM car before and I am handy person. My questing is how difficult it is to replace it on the contour? Is it way above my head? Can I just but dot marking on the belt and the pulley and make sure I align them when putting back on? Has anyone done this on this model before?

Thanks,
Tony Wong

If you have the V6, then here ya go.
Drain the radiator. Remove the heatshield, 3 7mm or 8mm bolts. Now the cam pulley, tension pulley and water pump are now exposed. Push down on the tension pulley, the belt is now loose. The waterpump is now ready to come out. About 8 bolts hold it in, 8mm IIRC. It should pop right off. Make sure you don't have your face right underneath it when you pull it off. I did this and ended with a mouth full of rather warm antifreeze, LMAO at my dumbass self. There is a ring of sorts that goes around the impellers that stays in the block, it just sits in there and is held in by the waterpump, make sure that that stays in there cause Ford had a reason for it being there. Make sure all the old gasket is removed.
Reverse all previously said to have a new waterpump and peace of mind.

Mike, not at all. Thanks for your input though.
SQPlus, there is no mention of removing the timing belt in the Ford's instruction. Are they saying that the pump can be slide out behind the timing belt? There are timming belt guide pulley attached to the water pump casting. By removing these two pulley, it will loosing the timing belt.
This the how my water pump looks like, if I can
successfully attach the picture.
