On average I get 4-6 transmissions thru my shop a week, from all over USA & local( some from Ford dealers!!)...most have 1)grenaded diffs, rebuild /repair with quaife 2)BADLY grenaded diffs with HOLES in the trans case 3)Syncros shot and/or selector mech shot.....Lets not fly in the face of experience here...root cause study is fine if its a fresh problem and no data...these are known faults that repeat....

I am still hoping that one of the door prizes at Spring Zing 2002 is a new Diff installed by Terry

OK, i got the call from the ford dealership today. The linkage broke. They said a piece fell into the transmisson also. So they want 1100 dollars to fix it without recovering the lost piece and 1800 dollars to find the missing piece. This sounds wayyy step to me but im very unexperienced in this. Do you guys think i should just let ford do this or I know of some really good shops here in town that i can get other estimates for. thanks for all the help.

This is most definitely linkage because if you shift hard or the clips wear they just pop off and the shifter moves easily with no resistaance. You need to check directly at the linkage and move it. I always had this problem fortunately i learned how to put it on stranded on the road . Good luck

The broken piece the dealer is reffering to must be the pinch bolt head.If its left in the trans it can become wedged and 'exit' thru the trans case.To get it out you either have to fish for it in the box or remove the trans, strip it to get it out.I cant beleave they are suggesting that its left in...that is 100%BS....

Terry, I know you see many trannies every week and have more tranny experience than everybody on the CEG combined, but your short-tempered and cocky outbursts aren't always as helpful as you intend them to be - as in this case. ][/QUOTE] Just look at this quote: And how many MTX75's do you strip in a week Tony????,you just cant resist a dig can you, first the Aussie bars now here....
It seems to me that more than 90% of your posts are exclusively aimed at bringing more business your way rather than genuinely shedding light on problems to help others learn. You seem to show very little respect for many who post on here and seem to see us as a bunch of little clueless kids with wallets. Tell me that I'm wrong - or that it's BS. I'm know that many of us CEGers have had fantastic dealings with HMS. I don't dispute the quality of your work or expertise, but all I would like to ask is that you not be so quick to dismiss the opinions and experience of others. We are a group - not a one man show.

Terry might have had (ok that's bad passive English) reason to be skeptical of my motives, we had a rather heated discussion about the Aussie bar that resulted in the threads deletion!
So I'm willing to give him a pass on this one and not hold it against him.
FWIW, even though Terry and I argue sometimes here, when I have my transaxle rebuilt, I know who I will contact, Terry Haines.
Just another $0.02 worth of my opinion.
I do agree with the general premise that it doesn't always take an expert to have the right answer. But rarely do non-experts answer the really difficult questions correctly. For example, Easter weekend and I'm doing a simple memory install on an E10000 system. Should take all of 1 hour. Eight hours later, and after having backed out all changes we've made (that was step three of our recovery) the system was still down. It took another 12 hours on the phone with the engineers who built the system to get the problem resolved. The diagnostics, the facts and the results all were contradictory. It took me eight hours to conclude the diagnostics were lying to me. It took the factory engineers another 12 hours to figure out why.
It still takes experts to solve the difficult problems. And to be fair. Even if I diagnose a transaxle problem, you sure as heck don't want me trying to repair it!
Thanks to all who contribute here,
TB

This morning I just got fed up with the abrupt and condescending manner in which Terry trashes people's contributions. I feel it discourages people from sharing experiences of their own - even if they know less than Terry which is often the case.
I took advantage of his rare mis-diagnosis to point it out.
