If he could put it in all the gears w/o the clutch, and the shifter moves in a big circle...

...I know, I'm spitting in the wind (disagreeing with Terry) but I'm going for the linkage as the problem.

Don't you mean you talk to ENGINE...motors are the thingies that turn the engine over :p and I do not talk to them, I just listen and they tell me their problems...that is how I know engines are female, they talk and I am supposed to listen laugh

No dig at all. I'm looking at the symptoms, and if the shifter moves so freely, can engage without clutch, it points me to the linkage.

Of course the potentially fatal assumption I'm making is the
problem is accurately described.

I would certainly check that first, prior to R&R the transaxle.

So Terry, I have nothing personal to prove here, just a
different opinion. And I believe it to be a logical diagnosis,
not just disagreeing to be disagreeing.

OK?

Now you guys got me all worried.

Terry, how or what is the frequency of the MTX going south in my 95 SE (2.5 Duratec)? I've been running it quite hard lately, with many shifts coming in at over 3K RPM. Of course, I've always driven my car hard, not just since I've had it chip'd and whatnot. I've currently got 120K miles on the car. $2100 is not something I look forward to having to "plan" for.

I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby.
There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there.
You can make a small fortune in racing. Start with a large one.

Ok, Ok.

Maybe its the two people seperated by a common language thing, but I don't harbor any ill will towards Terry.

But...

I'd like to know why what I proposed indicates, "I don't know what the hell I'm talking about."

I'm just familiar with presenting all possible root causes and planning to address each one. This works the same for cars as well as computers.
