Ok, today I was going to eat with my parents and I was supposed to meet them there for a birthday lunch thing for me. So I was at a stop light and I got throw 1st to 2ndand 2nd to 3rd good but when I shifted to 4th I noticed that it shifted really easily. So i didnt think much of it right that second but then i let the clutch out and gave it gas and it was like I was still in neutral but I was in 4th. So I pulled over and i couldput my car in all teh gears without the clutch and i could put my car in first and then just move it all around in a big circle. So i called the tow truck and its down at teh local ford dealer now. They said they cant look at the car until monday though. So thats when I will find out exactly what happened. Im pissed cause right after we ate lunch i was supposed to go get a new deck for my car but not anymore cause its in the shop.

With a little bit of luck it is only a shift linkage problem.

I had the same thing... I was shifting hard during 3rd and it felt like nothing. It is a BIG problem. It cost me $2100 (Lucily, I got one of those silly Ford warranties wink ...)

I'm not a gearhead, but having experienced an almost identical problem a few years ago in my mom's 90 Honda Accord LX 5spd, I think it's probably one of two things:

1) The transmission has come detached from the drivetrain; this is what my dad thought was the problem when I called him about it (Mom was out of town), and would have cost more than the car was worth to fix. Fortunately, it turned out to be:

2) The front axle, which had been replaced by- and was still warranty from the Midas I'd had it towed to, so it cost nothing to fix.

The problem was very similar to yours, I'd gotten out of the driveway and to the entrance of our subdivision just fine, but pulling out onto the highway the car launched and then suddenly I was getting no power at all. I pulled off immediately, waited for some traffic to pass, then tried again. In first gear it would make this grinding sound as I let the clutch out; similar results in second, but I found the higher the gear I was in the heavier the grinding sound. Releasing the clutch in 1st or 2nd did *not* kill the engine, but it would in third, fourth, fifth, and reverse.

Needless to say, when my dad got home the following evening and I told him it would cost nothing to fix, he was pretty damn happy. smile

One tooth on the diff gears is all it takes to loose all the drive etc.....

Had the same thing happen to me on my original MTX75 at about 20k miles. It was hard (near 6500) shift from second to third. I heard a pop and then there was no joy. I was on the highway and had to coast to the side of the road (at about 2am). I could shift in to all gears w/o pushing in the clutch. It had to be towed. It was still under warranty so I never got an explanation as to what the root problem was but they replace the transmission.

Good luck...
