1.8t. vr6 doesn't have a downpipe. I'd go 1.8 for the mods and reliability as long as you kept the boost reasonably low.
What's reasonably low boost to you? This GTI is certainly running a 24psi spike on that 100octane program, holding 21psi all through midrange, falling off at the top end because of the tiny stock K03/04 turbo. 1.8t of course. 
klavender: Ultimate, no-holds-barred, money-is-no-object performance is in the VR6. How's an AWD conversion, 6 speed box, twin turbo, 500hp/500tq sound?? There's several of those prowling the USA, and even more in Europe. Over 30k$ in mods right there, so it's not for everyone.
If you're on a budget (like most sane individuals) then the 1.8t is the key. 300hp/300tq is a reliable setup, there are literally hundreds of those driving around the 'states...
