I wouldn't be caught dead in a Grand National. I don't have either the mullet haircut nor the wife-beater tank tops that match this car. I'm sure strapping a lawn chair to a '76 NASA rocket booster would be quick too.. LOL, sorry... '87 GNX vs '03 GTI. Two very different cars!
Really, I know they're quarter mile beasts.. I just find it refreshing when I see the performance people extract from modern compact cars with so little money. Chrysler's turbo engines should be very interesting as well... won't be caught dead sitting in one of those either though.
For the record, I've never driven any car down the 1/4 track.. only road-racing circuits...

If I had a GN (not saying I would buy one) I'd put na wife beater and sport a mullet just for shits and giggles. I'd also shave my head the next day..... ...but thats just me

So, is that a 1.8T or VR6? Which would be better in terms of available mods? Or, which one would be the best perfomance/reliability balance?

1.8t. vr6 doesn't have a downpipe. I'd go 1.8 for the mods and reliability as long as you kept the boost reasonably low.
For the record, if I could find a gn with low miles and decent insurance, I would sell the contour without a doubt. Heck, I have been thinking about souping up the turbo dodge caravan lately. What is getting into me?

What's reasonably low boost to you? This GTI is certainly running a 24psi spike on that 100octane program, holding 21psi all through midrange, falling off at the top end because of the tiny stock K03/04 turbo. 1.8t of course.
klavender: Ultimate, no-holds-barred, money-is-no-object performance is in the VR6. How's an AWD conversion, 6 speed box, twin turbo, 500hp/500tq sound?? There's several of those prowling the USA, and even more in Europe. Over 30k$ in mods right there, so it's not for everyone.
If you're on a budget (like most sane individuals) then the 1.8t is the key. 300hp/300tq is a reliable setup, there are literally hundreds of those driving around the 'states...

You're running 20+ psi on a stock 1.8T turbo???
Awesome. I've always wanted a 1.8T car, primarily the last gen A4 Quattro. I figured one could only get it up to 225 hp reliably (1 bar chip plus exhaust). What a brilliant engine. And so bulletproof.

I'm not! I don't have the stock turbo any more.
This guy most definitely is though. We get a huge boost spike at torque peak, right around 3000rpm. Then boost falls off gradually as the engine's volumetric efficiency goes up along the rev range. Not much boost left by 5500 rpm, this is a tiny turbo we're talking about.
The low-end torque is mad though, launching in 2nd gear off a stoplight breaks traction at 2500rpm when the engine comes under boost..

That's one HOT GTI you've got!
I looked at your pics, that one of the dash where you're at 2600 rpm going about 30 km/h. Are you experiencing 1st gear wheelspin (is that the traction control light on)?
Also with the CEL on??
Nice car.

I was just trying to show at what mileage my CEL had come back on.. trying to get an issue resolved with the dealership. They fixed it now.
The other light is indeed the car fighting for traction as it's getting on boost. Just a fluke that it got in the picture as the light flashes while the traction control is active. I wasn't the one taking the pic BTW.
Thanks on the props also, the car is changing a lot this summer. New body kit, different wheels, etc..
