Does anyone else find it REALLY hard to read their dipstick on the ATX? I did the 4 quart fluid drain and fill and kept having a hell of a time trying to read that thing. I finally ended up cleaning the stick with some Brake Kleen and washing it off. Dried thoroughly, stuck it in and finally got a fairly good reading.
Any thoughts?

I guess if the fluid was not changed on a regular basis and the dipstick and not cleaned off regularly, like when checking fluid levels, it could get coverd with clutch gunk.

Mine took 3.5 qts too. I'm sure the 4 qts was just a estimation on someones part. It didn't bother me too much, but the poor shmuck who just drains and throws a full four quarts in is going to be in trouble!

**cough** Here is the last step of the drain & fill process from the Ford Manual. Bear in mind this is from a 98 manual, cause I am not sure if there was a fluid reducetion in 99...
Add 3.7 liters (4 quarts) of Motorcraft MERCON ® Multi - Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT - 2 - QDX or equivalent meeting MERCON ® specification. Start the engine and move the transaxle range selector lever through all gear positions. Check the fluid and add as required.
Might want to make sure you are on a level surface. Next time you are at the gas station filling up, check the level then and see where it is.

if you do it right,,,, it does take 4qts. It helps if you open drain, then slowly jack the car up, let it sit for a minute and slowly jack back down and let sit for a minute. It gets nearly all 4qts. out.

Ya know, I usually do that when changing the motor oil, let the jack down. I don't know why I didn't think of it when I did the tranny!
Thanx!
