My wife's 2001 F-150 just started getting an intermittent "Service Engine Soon" light at just 22,000 miles. We have a dealer appointment for next week. The manual says something about bad gas. Engine sounds normal to me. Hope it is just emissions stuff. Is this a common engine light problem?

Without the OBD?II Diagnostic Trouble Codes, which an OBD?II reader would be able to extract from this vehicle's PCM, it's impossible to even make a good guess as to what the problem might be, based on what you've said so far.

Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

Bob is correct.
Until someone reads the codes it is all speculation. There are too many posibilities to list. It is not uncommon for the CEL to come on with no noticable drivability problem.

Ok, thanks. Still under warranty, although she has managed to put 24,500 miles on it in 15 months! Looks like we will be buying that leased vehicle in Feb 2003. I guess I was trying to find out if it is a common problem. Never had the probelm on previous 97 V-6. This 4.6 V-8 seems great but this light worries me. Another 5.4 owner with a 97 said his comes on all the time if fuel cap is not tight. I checked and ours is. Thanks to both of you.
