printed the 99M03 ?recall / owner notification program? letter on MystiqueSVT?s site, read it and took it with me friday to the dealer.

they seemed confused. i had to show them the cracked wire insulation, show them what the recall was for, and in the letter where it says what needed to be done. after i left they still seemed a little confused.

they called me later in the afternoon and said that they verified the insulation was cracking, that the recall work would be done. (they never seem very happy when they can't charge you for something.)

i can get a rental car for two days. i haven?t got it yet, i didn?t need it this weekend, but i will get it monday if my car isn?t finished.

Hey guys--

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with cracked wiring. I just discovered that the wiring that lines the trunk are split in half, which should be why my back-up lights are out. (I've checked the bulbs, and they're fine, tranny's fine, etc.) I'm not really sure how they got to be that way, I guess just wear & tear. It's a 96 model. Any feedback?

How long did it take your dealer to decide to do the recall for you? And how long did it take for them to give you a rental? Mine's going in on Tuesday, and I need a car to go to school and work.

sfh2598: i think the ?99m03? is only for the wiring harness(s) in the engine compartment. i?ve never checked the condition of the wires in my trunk, i guess i will be doing that when i get my car back.

AirKnight: it took the dealer from about 7am to 3pm to inspect and decide, but they didn?t seem to be familiar with the issue, so it might take more or less time.

i didn?t get the rental yet because ford only pays for two days, and i may need it monday ? tuesday if my car isn?t done. its already been two days, because they had to order the parts. so.........if i had gotten the rental friday i would just be out of luck on monday? that seems a little odd.

1)Only 95-97 models are affected by the wiring harness cracking issue (caused by wiring insulation that cannot handle the heat)

2)98 and newer models don't have a hood liner

3)The hood liner traps heat

4)Unknown is whether 98 and newer models use the same wire insulation as previous models or not (it's easy to tell the difference but I can't easily get access to a 98 or newer model to see)

Both my '95 and '96 zetec have no hood liner. Is the insulation only on duratecs, or what confused

Perhaps not coincidentally wires seem fine on both.

finally got my car back saturday. the wiring harness was done for free, but of course they had to make money off of me for something... when they got the car back together they told me it was missing because of bad plug wires and plugs.

i had them fix it, because i didn?t want it leaving there without running correctly just incase something was wrong with the new wiring harness. they ripped me off with the usual $360, it seems to be running fine at the moment.

the missing problems are nothing new, i?ve been through three coil packs and two sets of plug wires and plugs in the last year. i sure wish I could find out what keeps frying these parts. (the dealer doesn?t seem to be interested in finding out why either. i can probably guess why that is.)
