What does a blinking Overdrive off light mean?

Your O/D light turns red!?

The blinking O/D light usually means something is wrong with your trans.

Once I sped through a humungous puddle of water, meleted my Amp fuse and thought I ruined my trans too becuase I also had the blinking green O/D light. Don't know what it was, but it magically stopped. I also would like to know what it is becuase I've only got another 10,000 miles left on my warranty.

This happened on my '97 a couple of times last year and I tried unsuccesfully to find its meaning in my service manual. The owner's manual says take to dealer. The flashing would usually stop after stopping and immediatley re-starting the car. Problem went away but there were never any noticable symptoms given by ATX operation; fluid level and color were OK at all times. Now, say 10,000 miles later ATX is still working OK.

I searched problem forum under "O/D light" at the time and saw some tales of woe. You may wish to search and review past posts.

In general in seems that, other than proper fluid level and perhaps fluid changes, there are few "little" atx problems that can be solved by DIY owners.

As was said in an above post, the owners manual tells you to take it to the dealer. This is an indication of problems with the transmission. This happened in my parents '97 Explorer, and it turned out there was a cracked synchro in the transmission. Better safe than sorry...

You should take the car in and get it scanned for codes. Speed sensor seems to be a common cause for that but it could be something much more serious. My dealer said I needed a new ATX, believe it or not it turned out to be faulty plug wires interferring with the speed sensors signal. At any rate don't delay.

I had the same blinking GREEN O/D lights around 68000+ miles. It would blink for a few seconds and then remain on after that (if I had O/D off or on, it would blink and return to on). I didn't notice any performance issues and has not blinked since and I'm at 78500+ miles now.

Thanks, Everyone. My car has almost 100,000 miles on it so I'm just going to drive it until it bursts into flames. It wouldn't be worth taking it to the dealer. Thanks Anyway.
