I just purchased a 1998 SE 2.0 (Automatic Transmission) with 74,000 miles. When I accelerate I hear a noise that seems to be in the dashboard and it sounds like a can of marbles. Once I reach a steady speed or if I accelerate gradually, the noise is not present.
The noise doesn't occur when I rev the engine while in neutral. Any ideas?

What's in your glovebox? Did you check it out? I had that problem before and I realized that I stuck the ashtray in there cuz I don't smoke.

My SVT Contour used to do the same thing but it was intermittent, and it wasn't what was in the glove box. Never did figure out what it was.

Previous owners of Contiques have been known to lose marbles, then sell their cars. Usually happens at about 73,000 miles. Check your dash vents. Welcome aboard.

This may sound dumb, but check the change tray. You never know...

k- gonna sound wierd but i had the same prob with my saturn and my tour did this for a while too- it sounded like it was coming from the center of the dash- when actually it was coming form the motor- only does it when you really get down on the gas? i forget what it was that causes this- something to do with the motor. Sounds like marbles- or in my case someone shaking a spray paint can really fast. I got an oil change and the tour stopped doing it- i hate the saturn and do not drive it anymore, it is leaving soon anyway

You know, I think you just have a couple of screws loose, j/k. I have the same problem, athought my faulty wheel bearings probably escillated the situation. At first I thought it was the change cup, then I moved on to the glove box as well as the doors. Still nothing. I dont notice it anymore, but the tires humming forces me to turn the stereo volume to ear shattering levels to keep what sanity I have left. Good luck finding it.
